Corrections Policy

Last updated: April 9, 2026

Banned Index aims to be the most accurate, sourceable database of US book bans available. We take corrections seriously. If you believe a record on the site is inaccurate, outdated, or improperly attributed, we want to hear from you and fix it.

Report an error

Use the form below. Every submission goes into our admin review queue and gets a reference number. If you provide an email, we send an automated acknowledgment immediately and a reply when the review is complete (target: 30 days).

The page on bannedindex.org where you spotted the error.

Required. We can’t apply unsourced corrections — see why. Examples: news article, school board minutes, court filing, publisher statement.

About you (optional but appreciated)

If you provide an email, we’ll send an acknowledgment now and a reply when the review is complete.

Prefer email? You can also reach us at hello@bookhoardapp.com with subject line “Correction request”. Email submissions don’t go through the queue, so the form above is preferred for tracking.

What we will do

Upon receiving a correction request:

  1. We will acknowledge receipt within 7 days
  2. We will review the request, check your source, and compare against our original source(s)
  3. If the correction is supported, we will update the database, add a note documenting the change, and reply to you with confirmation. Target turnaround: 30 days.
  4. If we cannot verify the correction, we will reply explaining why and ask for additional information
  5. If we disagree with the correction, we will explain our reasoning and point to the sources that support the current record. You may escalate by providing additional sources or context.

Types of corrections we make

  • Factual errors: wrong title, wrong author, wrong jurisdiction, wrong date, wrong status, wrong reason
  • Status updates: a book we listed as “removed” has been reinstated; a law we listed as “signed” has been struck down by a court
  • Source issues: our source link has gone dead and we have a replacement; we misattributed a decision to the wrong school board
  • Duplicate records: the same ban appears twice under slightly different jurisdiction names
  • Missing context: a ban was reversed on appeal but we never recorded the reversal

Takedown requests

If you believe content on Banned Index should be removed entirely (not just corrected), please email us with subject line “Takedown request” and explain the basis for your request. We will respond within 30 days.

Because Banned Index publishes information about public policy decisions made by public institutions (school boards, libraries, legislatures), most information on the site is protected as public record or public-interest reporting. We will decline takedown requests that we believe would undermine the public record.

We generally honor takedown requests in cases involving:

  • Personal identifying information about private individuals
  • Information subject to a legal seal, protective order, or lawful court directive
  • Content that is demonstrably defamatory (false statements of fact presented as true)
  • Copyright claims that meet DMCA requirements

Transparency

When we make a correction or remove a record, we note it in the record’s change log. Significant corrections may also be documented on our methodology page. We believe transparency about our own mistakes is part of being a credible database.
